The 1U478-003 bi-directional, piston air pump employs a compact crank linkage, which reduces size and allows mounting directly to an engine’s accessory pad. Its ability to operate in both a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction offers wider applicability and reduces inventory. Sealed, maintenance-free bearings never need lubrication and are responsible for the pump's ability to operate in a dry condition.

The patented crank mechanism drives the piston straight up and down in the cylinder, virtually eliminating all side loading on the piston. This significantly reduces friction and the subsequent heating generated by the pump while reducing wear on the piston ring, directly contributing to an extended service life. As the piston moves up and down, it pumps in both directions. This minimizes internal leakage and provides added vacuum capacity at lower engine RPM resulting in quicker gyro erection and stability during taxiing and takeoff.

A total of sixteen high-performance silicon valves provide an added measure of reliability and avoid single point failures. Inherent in the pump’s design is its ability to tolerate foreign matter in the vacuum system without failing catastrophically.
